Move With The Seasons - Summer Solstice 2021

One Day Workshop, 10am - 4pm, Hampstead Heath

Some say it’s the first day of summer. Summer Solstice is a time of celebration and joy as we arrive at the longest day and shortest night. High energy and abundance fuels our outlook on life this time of year and naturally permeates to our movement practice filled with play, exuberance and expression.

Everything has a season. Our bodies, our relationships with people and our habitat, our events challenges and phases in life. Life isn't static it contains patterns, cycles and rhythm and with it an opportunity for awareness, adaption and harmony.

Move with the seasons is a 1-day workshop drawing upon the inspiration and wisdom of the changing seasons to explore the relationships of body, people and place and how they sculpt one another. MWTS is primarily an outlook on observing, coordinating and adapting (moving) with change. Moving with the rhythm of the changing seasons of our inner and outer landscapes. Viewing the moving body in a changing environment through the lenses of movement practice, seasons of change and story.

I will share my ideas through guided individual movement practice, creative games and tasks to spark the imagination and fuel the muse for reflection. Shifting attention between working with your own body, with partners/within a group and interacting and moving through the surrounding environment.

Celebrate the Solstice by reaching outwards again and actively engaging with the energy of the summer season, supported by the energy of nature doing the same thing. A day of immersion in movement and activities embracing the season of summer and the corresponding element of fire.

Body - People - Place. Moving in, about and with the Seasons

COST: £95 EARLYBIRD / £120 AFTER 10TH JUNE

Places are limited to 10.

Some of the things we will touch on:

  • Ecological movement - Ideas around the co-creation of movement between body, people and place (our bodies in their social and physical environment). Or in other words, an individual practice and an interrelational practice (partner/group work and locomotion/moving through and with our environment).

  • Seasonal Practice - Rediscover playful and meaningful movement in the context of the season and how to balance the cultivation of a practice that has both freedom and structure. What we do a lot of in summer, will differ during winter. Different times of year and seasons of change require a different approach depending on how much energy and time you have.

  • Explore the blurred lines between effectiveness (utility) and expression, reality and imagination, when moving solo or interacting with the environment or another human(s) and how creativity and imagination are cultivated in all.

  • Move with the trees - Tree climbing to Tree-Running to Tree-Dancing and back again - learn how to flow in trees via the lenses of different forms of arboreal locomotion, tree climbing and dance. Play on the continuum of Treerunning and Treedancing, effectiveness and expression. What techniques in Parkour work well in trees? How can we take ideas from our solo and partner dance and movement situations and practice and apply them to dancing with the trees?

  • Flow - learn to flow in context on the ground and over various obstacles, whether grass, bark or with other humans.

  • Ground interaction - Archetypal ground positions and transitions, ground flow and break falling, rebuild your relationship, confidence and vocabulary moving on and getting to and from the ground.

  • Partner/group interaction - rapport/connection building games, based around non-contact for now.

  • Manipulative skills / cooperative building - Unique building and crafting tasks putting lifting carrying and tool use into context and exploring creative expression in finding harmony in adding to one's environment with the "sculpting of space"

  • Mobility development tools - joint health and longevity, building coordination and collaboration to channel the forces experienced by our bodies.  Flexibility with strength and control, resilience and the sensitivity to react to the unknown.

  • An introduction to strength training with practical application to context, moving through the environment and adapting to the unknown/chaotic situations in mind.
