Harmonious Movement - Strong Legs, Free Arms

Building spring-like legs and whip-like arms that work in harmony

6 weekly Drop-in classes or sign up for the course which gives extra support. Starting June 7th at Miller’s Way Project

How can we orchestrate the whole body and organise our joints through coordination and rhythm to move as one animal and “dance with gravity”? This series of classes will explore the music your whole body can create with the notes you resonate best with so you can “sing” in harmony with what you already have rather than focussing on increasing range (of motion) you may not need. The course will include controlled movements for awareness and retuning, coordinative movement patterns to explore rhythm, musicality and how you learn and sequencing ideas on how to cultivate your own practice once you leave with the material. The core of the practice will be around coordinative movement patterns (arm swinging and dynamic footwork from simple to complex), inspired by Ben’s teachings from Fighting Monkey, universal human patterns of striking, throwing tribal/folk dance and many sports that involve the transfer of energy via weight-shifting, rotation and balance.

  • Retuning: Through whole body controlled articulations of your joints with a takeaway tool box for the spine, arms and legs. Mainly explored through circular joint movements, lunges, squats, motion of the spine and stances, emphasising rotation, weight shifting, balance and spirals.

  • Unison: Universal power generation - principles to understand the coordination and interconnection of stance, shifting weight, transfer of energy and footwork that is non-sport specific but relevant to many of them, for example throwing, striking arts, racket sports and movements that are as universally valid as possible.

  • Rhythmical connections: Arm swinging coordinations that explore elasticity and the robustness of your learning strategies.

  • Improvisation: Improvising within the material as a script or map to explore your own variations and imagination, But also improvising with the order and structure of the material; collecting and reordering the tools given over the course so that they will fit your context and needs and so you can craft your “own” practice instead of relying on protocols.
